China Studies Post-doctoral Fellowship, Ashoka University

The China Studies Post-doctoral Fellowship (CSPF), offered jointly by Ashoka University (India) and the Harvard-Yenching Institute (US), is an opportunity for recent PhDs in China Studies to conduct a two-year study on China under the guidance of established scholars and simultaneously teach courses on China at top Indian universities.

The fully-funded fellowship is open to scholars who have either completed their PhD anytime after 2012 or will complete their PhD by Spring 2022 Semester, with their research specifically focussed on China (utilizing Chinese language sources) across various disciplines of humanities and social science. These include, but are not limited to, anthropology, archaeology, cultural studies, economics, geography, history, international relations, language and literature, legal history, philosophy, political science, religion and sociology. The fellowship is also open to scholars of China Studies who are teaching at Indian universities and wish to pursue novel research on China while continuing their teaching engagement at their current university. Applicants should have a working knowledge of Mandarin, sufficient for academic research.

Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS Early Career Fellowships in China Studies

The Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS Early Career Fellowships in China Studies are now accepting applications
for the 2021-22 fellowship competition. The deadline for Luce/ACLS Early Career Fellowships in China Studies is 9PM Eastern Time on November 1, 2021. 

In cooperation with the Henry Luce Foundation, ACLS has embarked on a three-year bridging initiative to reassess and reconfigure the Luce/ACLS Program in China Studies.  We will convene scholars at all ranks, higher education leaders, journalists, and other readers of research and writing on China to re-imagine and transform our program to meet the needs of China studies in the 21st century.

Fellowships in 2021-22 will support research, writing, and curriculum development.  An intensive retreat on the future of the field, on progress of fellowship projects, and on their curricular implications will be held in June 2022.

Applications are invited for a 3-year Research Assistant (80%) based at the University of Nottingham, generously funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The post is part of the Leverhulme Research Project ‘Divine Saving in Greek and Chinese Polytheism’, directed by Dr. Theodora Jim (University of Nottingham, U.K.) together with Prof. Vincent Goossaert (EPHE, Paris). The successful candidate will work with the project team to analyse primary sources on Chinese religions from about the 10th to the 15th centuries C.E., and to compare and contrast Chinese polytheism with Greek polytheism.

This scholarship is offered in the context of a research project on the portrayal of Kang Youwei as an “in-between” figure in contemporary Chinese academia (for more details, see “Project” below). We are looking for a PhD (or Postdoc) student in Sinology, Chinese studies, Chinese philosophy, or Chinese intellectual history willing to research current views on Kang Youwei in relation to past, present and future issues in religion, politics, education, philosophy, or history.

Postdoc at Zhejiang University

A Two-year Postdoctoral Program in Zhejiang University (Fall 2021, Hangzhou, China)

The Department of Philosophy in Zhejiang University, in collaboration with the English Department of Zhejiang University City College, is looking for a young postdoctoral research scholar (below 35) who is specialized in the study of Christianity in China in the early modern period, comparative religion, and/or Chinese religion(s). The scholar should have a good command of Chinese, English and some command of other Asian or European languages, such as Japanese, French etc. Highly motivated to do research, the scholar should collaborate with other scholars and hold a good publication record in top-tier journals. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills are also expected. The annual stipend is approximately $45,000 (270,000-290,000RMB), with accommodation and other employment benefits provided. Philosophy as a Way of Life: Texts and Studies will make available English translations of key studies on PWL and publish scholarly monographs and edited collections that consider its different aspects and implications.

Books in this series will explore PWL in antiquity, the renaissance, the early modern period, and up to the present, PWL as a methodological approach to the history of philosophy, the implications of PWL for understanding education and its history, the cross-cultural possibilities it opens up, the relationships between PWL, virtue ethics and philosophy of culture, and the different literary genres of PWL, including the way these genres impact the style and content of ancient, medieval and early modern philosophical works.

Manuscripts should be at least 80,000 words in length (including footnotes and bibliography). Manuscripts may also include illustrations and other visual material. The editors will consider proposals for original monographs, edited collections, translations, and critical primary source editions.

5th Greater China Summer Workshop Program in Chinese Studies (online)

The 5th Greater China Summer Workshop Program in Chinese Studies will be now held online. The program will start on July 17, 2020 and end on August 15, 2020. Applications for the online program will be open until June 19th, 2020.

In the online program, there are two types of participants:

-Active Participants-
Are expected to engage with the lectures, textbook, and pre-readings
As there are very limited places for Active Participants, some applicants may be placed on the waitlist

-Viewers-
Can attend lectures and submit questions to the lecturers, but are not expected to engage with the course readings although they are highly advised to. Viewer places will be given according to the level of commitment.

Application forms to be an Active Participant or a Viewer and the program schedule can be found on the program’s website.
