CFP: The Future of Whole Person Education in East Asian Higher Education

Invitation for proposal (abstract) submission for the conference on “The Future of Whole Person Education in East Asian Higher Education: Its Philosophy and Endeavour from Within and Abroad,” 2019

With the support of generous donation from Tin Ka Ping Foundation, the Department of Religion and Philosophy and the Centre for Sino-Christian Studies at Hong Kong Baptist University are going to organize a conference on the theme “The Future of Whole Person Education in East Asian Higher Education: Its Philosophy and Endeavour from Within and Abroad”, to be held at Hong Kong Baptist University on Friday and Saturday, September 27-28, 2019. The conference is organized to pay tribute to the late Dr. Tin Ka Ping, a renowned education benefactor in the Greater China Region. The Foundation has provided funds to more than 90 tertiary institutions, 166 secondary schools, more than 40 primary schools and kindergartens, and over 1,650 suburban libraries across 34 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in the mainland China. In Hong Kong, more than 20 primary and secondary schools, kindergartens and elderly and youth care centers are named after Dr. Tin. We anticipate that the conference will share the vision of the importance of moral education and develop a culture of service and virtue cultivation in Chinese and East Asian Societies.

The conference aims to explore the context and the future development of whole person education and philosophy. Discussions will also extend to the promotion of value education, moral education, cultural education, East Asian cultural contexts, and service learning in East Asia region. The following are some suggested sub-themes for the conference:

(1) Philosophy of whole person education;

(2) Context of whole person education in East Asia and case studies;

(3) Innovative trend of whole person education;

(4) Moral culture in the East and West and inter-cultural interaction;

(5) Moral education, value education and service culture in East Asia region;

(6) Confucianism and modern education;

(7) Ethics and modern education;

(8) Social, political and economic research and value education;

(9) Asian religions and whole person education

Proposal of paper covering (one of) the above-mentioned sub-themes are welcomed. The submitted work should be original work that has not been previously published. Word limit for paper is 10,000 words in Chinese or 8,000 words in English, inclusive of abstract, footnotes and references. Authors of selected proposals will be invited to join the conference for presentation. For overseas speakers, we will offer a travel subsidy of HK$1,000, and cover board and lodging during the conference (with one extra night of lodging before the conference). Upon peer-review and revision after the conference, papers will be selected and published in English for promotion of philosophy and practice of whole person education. If you are interested to participate in the conference, please send your proposal through email (cscs@hkbu.edu.hk) to CSCS by the extended deadline before 5pm on February 11, 2019. The result will be announced by February 22, 2019.
