Government office can bring a salary and other kinds of socially acceptable economic reward. It can also involve expenses.

My question is this: in Confucius’ day, would the default assumption among the upper classes have been that office is an economic plum for one’s family (in ways that do not require great corruption)? I mean, the kind of office someone with Confucius’ plain qualifications might reasonably aim for.
