The Henry Luce Foundation/ACLS Early Career Fellowships in China Studies
Now Accepting Applications For 2020-21 Fellowship Competitions
The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) invites scholars seeking funds for research and writing to apply for the Henry Luce/ACLS Early Career Fellowships in China Studies.
Early Career Fellowships in China Studies identify and support innovative, early career scholars to ensure the continued intellectual vitality of the field of China Studies and to provide for its generational sustainability. The fellowships are financially supported by the Henry Luce Foundation with additional funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Application deadline: November 2, 2020 9pm EST
All topics and specializations in the humanities and related social sciences are welcome. Priority will be given to proposals based on research in China by the applicant. Research in Hong Kong, Macau, Tibet, Xinjiang, and Taiwan is eligible. Proposals based on research outside these areas will also be considered.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be recent PhDs (within eight years of receiving the degree), pre-tenure, who intend to pursue careers in the US or Canada.
- Applicants must have a working knowledge of Chinese.
- Projects must employ humanistic approaches and methods
Awards
Fellows receive portable stipends of up to $50,000 for two semesters, which may be used for travel, living expenses, or research. Fellows must be on leave from teaching and other employment during the fellowship tenure.
Luce/ACLS Early Career Fellowships promote inclusion, equity, and diversity as integral components of merit that enhance the scholarly enterprise. It is a priority that every cohort of Fellows and grantees is broadly inclusive of different backgrounds and cultures. In China studies we seek balance in regard to national origin, educational background, and current university affiliation, as well as in disciplinary approaches, topics, and historical periods studied.
