Post-Doctoral Teaching Fellowship in Japan Studies

The Asian Studies Program in the College of Arts & Sciences at Fairfield University, with the support of the ASIANetwork – Luce Teaching Fellow Program, seeks a dynamic teacher and serious scholar whose area of specialization centers on historical or contemporary aspects of Japan. Fairfield University is a highly selective institution in the Jesuit tradition, consistently ranked in the top four comprehensive universities in the North by The U.S. News & World Report. We are located less than one hour from New York City and twenty minutes from New Haven. The fellowship appointment is for one academic year, starting in September 2010 until the middle of May 2011. Salary is $46,000 with full health benefits. Preferred academic disciplines are Art History, History, and Religious Studies but other areas within the humanities or social sciences will be given serious consideration.

The fellow will teach four courses for the year (2/2), and be expected to participate in the intellectual and cultural life of an appointed host department, the Asian Studies Program, and the University. Two courses will be introductory level; the other two will be upper level courses that reflect the fellow’s interests. The fellow will receive some additional financial support to present research on campus, to participate in a faculty development program, and to develop research with use of resources both at Fairfield and at area institutions. In addition ASIANetwork will pay for the fellow to attend its annual conference. The fellow may be considered by Fairfield University at the end of the Fellowship for renewal as a Visiting Assistant Professor and for an eventual tenure-track position in an appropriate department.

Fellows should have earned a doctorate or terminal degree from a North American university within the prior 3 years. Applicants who are ABD may be considered, provided that they have a scheduled completion date prior to the beginning of the fellowship year verified by their graduate advisor.
