SEECR Deadline approaching

A note from Keith Knapp:

Dear Colleagues,

This is just a quick reminder that the deadline for sending in proposals for the Southeast Early China Roundtable annual meeting is fast approaching.  It is this Saturday, August 1.

Needless to say I’m biased, but it is a gem of a meeting.  The total number of paper-givers is small — always less than twenty.  That means you hear everybody’s presentation and everyone hears yours.  Since it is such a small meeting, you also get to know everyone.  In addition, the meeting is truly interdisciplinary — each year we attract scholars of religion, philosophy, history, art history, archaeology, literature and philology.  Another bonus is that the host university covers your room and board.  You just have to cover the cost of getting to the venue.

Anyhow don’t miss out.

The Call for Papers is below.

With warm regards,

Keith

SEECR Chair

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce that the University of Tennessee, Knoxville will host the 19th annual Southeast Early China Roundtable (SEECR), 30 October – 1 November 2015.

Erica Brindley (Pennsylvania State University) will begin the conference with a keynote address entitled “Civilizing the South in Han Times: Emerging Concepts and Practices of Jiao Hua among the Man-yi” at 6 p.m. on Friday, 30 October 2015. Panels will take place all day Saturday and Sunday morning in the UTK International House. In accordance with SEECR tradition, UTK will provide lodging and meals for presenters.

UTK has made a number of faculty appointments for scholars of China in several departments in the last few years, and the library has made important new acquisitions, including the Siku quanshu. We look forward to showing you around.

We welcome proposals for presentations dealing pre-Song China from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, including anthropology, archaeology, art history, history, literature,  philosophy, and religious studies. Please send a short abstract (250 words) of your proposed presentation and full institutional contact information to SEECR2015@utk.edu by 1 August 2015. Early submissions are welcome.

All the best,

Megan Bryson
