Boring Through the Great Wall

Perversely, this blog is not accessible through normal channels in China because of a general firewall that keeps out WordPress, Typepad, and other blog providers’ sites. But if you know someone in the PRC who is or might be interested in following the blog, send them this information: the blog can be accessed at  http://warpweftandway.wordpress.com.nyud.net:8090/ .  However, once accessed, ‘.nyud.net:8090’ has to be added to the domain name, manually, each time an internal link is clicked. It’s not ideal, but it seems to work for now.

  1. I have a few reports back that this works on and off; also, there’s a slight updating lag between this site and the mole site. We’ll keep working on the problem; look for updates.

  2. Just thought I’d mention a couple of options for those in China who don’t yet know all the ways we jump the firewall. One is to use a free proxy, although they come and go. One that has been working reliably for the past couple of months is http://www.evader.org

More reliable, but also more complicated to set up is tor/vidalia. You can find by clicking the rapidshare link here: http://www.paulobrien.net/firefox-vidalia-privoxy-tor-bundle-single-exe/comment-page-1/

Note that to use tor, you’ll have to use bridges. In preferences, just click the box “my ISP blocks connections to the Tor network”, and following the instructions to find/add bridges.

    • Thank you so much, Jeff. Any other tech-savvy readers should feel welcome to offer solutions or advice, either to readers in the PRC or to us (the administrators of the blog).
