Telos-Paul Piccone Institute’s China Initiative

The Telos-Paul Piccone Institute, which is affiliated with the journal Telos, has underway a multi-pronged China Initiative that is well worth blog readers’ attention. Through this initiative, the Institute seeks “to become a key bridge for a mutually regarding, critical discussion of social and political theory between China and the West, well beyond the circles of East Asia specialists. The Telos China Initiative will include a wide variety of programs to be developed over a five-year period beginning in 2024.”

Among other things, the initiative includes an upcoming conference on “China Keywords” that is currently calling for submissions, with a deadline of September 1; see here for more details.

The initative has also been sponsoring a series of podcast conversations about key terms like tianxia, wangdao, and others. See here for more.

CFP: International Society of East Asian Philosophy (ISEAP)

The International Society of East Asian Philosophy (ISEAP) will have its fourth international conference on December 14-15, which will be held at the Fukuoka University, Japan.

Abstracts for individual papers and organized panels in English(preferably), Chinese and Korean are welcomed. Presented papers will be invited to submit to a special issue of The Journal of East Asian Philosophy (published by Springer, peer-reviewed, all in English).

The submission deadline is September 1, 2024 (Japan Time). Please check the ISEAP website for more details regarding the conference and submission details.

Call for Festschrift: Celebrating Chung-ying Cheng’s Contributions and Life (1935-2024)

Chung-ying Cheng, Ph.D. in Philosophy (Harvard University), Professor (since 1963) and Professor Emeritus (since June 1, 2024) of Department of Philosophy, University of Hawaii at Manoa, USA,  Founding Editor and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Chinese Philosophy (in English language) (since 1973), Founding President of the International Society of Chinese Philosophy (since 1975), Founding President of the International Society of the Yijing《易經》(since 1979), Founding President of the International Society of Hermeneutics (since 1980), honoris causa of the International Institute for Hermeneutics Agora Hermeneutica (since 2021), had departed from his contributive journey on this world (and headed to another magnificent march as he always was a tireless soldier), at Kaiser Moanalua Hospital, Honolulu, on July 2, 2024, US Time.

To celebrate Professor Chung-ying Cheng’s life-time service and prolific achievements, the Journal of Chinese Philosophy calls for full articles to be peer-reviewed, under a tentative theme: Festschrift: Celebrating Chung-ying Cheng’s Contributions and Life (1935-2024).  All topics of leading scholarship in high quality American English are welcome and submissions are immediately available. CFP: Panel for the Association of Chinese Philosophers in America at 2025 Eastern APA

The Association of Chinese Philosophers in America welcomes scholars to submit proposals for individual papers to be considered for inclusion on a single ACPA group session at the 2025 APA Eastern Division Meeting. The meeting will be in person.

Submissions that engage with Chinese philosophy in a wide variety of ways are encouraged. There is no specific theme for the group session prior to receiving proposals. In addition to the quality of submission, the selection of papers for presentation will be based on how well they can be worked into a good session. The deadline for submission is July 25th, 2024. Submissions are accepted through this form. Guidelines for submission can be found in the form.

The 24th ISCP (International Society for Chinese Philosophy) conference “Addressing Global Crises and Reimagining Solutions through Chinese Philosophy” is going to be held in Ljubljana, Slovenia from Friday, June 20 to Monday, June 23, 2025, hosted by the Department of Asian Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana. Deadline extended for the 56th Annual Conference of the Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy

The 56th annual Conference of the Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy, “Philosophical Encounters,” will be held at Charles University Prague on September 16-18, 2024. Individual and panel proposals on any topic consistent with the SACP mission of advancing intercultural philosophy are welcomed by the conference board. The SACP board especially welcomes paper and panel submissions that reflect diverse Asian and comparative approaches to traditional philosophical concerns, as well as critical engagement with contemporary issues of global concern.

CFP: ISCP at AAR 2024

The ISCP is happy to announce they are holding an invited Related Scholarly Organization (RSO) panel at the 2024 meeting of the American Academy of Religion (AAR), to take place Nov 23-26 in San Diego, CA. They are currently inviting submissions of abstracts (250-300 words) for individual papers for consideration. All themes related to Chinese philosophy are welcome. However, accepted abstracts that closely align with the AAR conference’s major themes, such as philosophy of religion, religious studies, theology, and spirituality, may attract a broader audience. The presentation times will also be capped at 20 minutes to allow a discussion. Please read below for more information about submissions or the RSO session.

Below is the advertisement for this Fall’s EMU Undergraduate Conference in Philosophy.  If you have undergrads who are interested in presenting their work in Chinese philosophy at an undergraduate conference, we enthusiastically welcome such papers.  The conference has been very successful in welcoming students from across the country, and even internationally.  Prior conference programs can be found on the website.  The organizers emphasize inclusivity and mentorship, with each accepted paper receiving thoughtful feedback.

CFP: Proposed Journal of Social and Political Philosophy issue on Common Sense

In Eclipse of Reason (1947), Max Horkheimer provides a fundamental analysis of the ambivalences of the (Western) concept of reason and showcases what a dialectical understanding of reason could look like. The special issue of JSPP “Eclipse of Common Sense” proposes an analogous treatment of the concept of common sense. The issue will revisit the conceptual foundations and premises of common sense (analytical function); explore its ambivalent normative character (evaluative function); and suggest ways out of this impasse that are inherent (critical function). In a first step, authors will address from a conceptual and a historical perspective a series of parameters or intellectual constants at the core of the term’s conceptual content. Second, other papers will scrutinize the concept’s foundation for democratic societies and test the term’s political applicability by examining its emancipatory promises in regard to promoting core democratic values, e.g., inclusivity, plurality, and visibility. Third, some will draw attention to the dangers underlying every attempt to universalize the supposed qualities of a particular and contextually dependent, Western, type of common sense and extrapolate different ways to reconceptualize the term as well as different practices that help overcome it’s political-social shortcomings.
