Steve Bokenkamp and Terry Kleeman will offer their NEH Summer Seminar on reading Daoist texts again next summer, July 14 to August 1, in Boulder, CO.
This is an intensive three-week program introducing a variety of genres of Daoist literature–liturgies, hagiographies, precept codes, talismans, ordination documents, poetry collections, and sacred geographies–from the second century CE to today. Participants should have a solid command of normal literary Chinese and some facility in spoken Mandarin, but need have no special knowledge of Daoism. In your essay, you must explain how you will use Daoist sources in your research and teaching. Participants receive a stipend of $2,700 to cover transportation, lodging, and meals. Applicants must be United States citizens, residents of U.S. jurisdictions, or foreign nationals who have been residing in the United States or its territories for at least the three years immediately preceding the application deadline.
