BOSTON COLLEGE PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT – Assistant Professor of Philosophy, tenure track. AOS: Asian thought (Chinese or Japanese). The department is looking for someone specializing in a major tradition of Asian thought (competence in the
relevant languages presumed) and prepared for dialogue with colleagues and students many of whom identify with the continental European (phenomenological, hermeneutical) tradition. AOC: Broad competence in the history of philosophy. Successful candidates will have a record of strong research combined with outstanding research potential, and demonstrated excellence in teaching philosophy. Responsibilities include undergraduate core and elective courses and graduate courses (3-2 course load), plus Ph.D. supervision and service to the department. The department supports an interdisciplinary core program in the study of major philosophical and religious texts (Perspectives on Western Culture) and a program of ethical, political, and theological analysis for students engaged in service programs (PULSE Program). Boston College Department of Theology invites applications for a tenure-track position in Comparative Theology with expertise in East-Asian Religions (Confucianism, Taoism and/or East Asian Buddhism), beginning in September 2013. Knowledge of the history of Christianity in East-Asia, and/or ability to engage East-Asian Religions in dialogue with Christianity is desirable. The successful candidate will teach an undergraduate core course as well as advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in East-Asian Religions. Boston College has a PhD program in Comparative Theology. In addition to these two positions, with John Berthrong and Bob Neville at Boston University, and Michael Puett and Peter Bol at Harvard, Boston has a good group of scholars working on Chinese (or at least East Asian) thought. May Sim, Steve, and Manyul aren’t too far away either.
(They’re building a giant humanities building, by the way, to house philosophy and theology, set to open in January. A lovely campus in general, too.)
