Perspectives on Meritocracy in China

The excellent collaborative website on contemporary China, ChinaFile, has an intriguing essay by Taisu Zhang on the historical background to contemporary Chinese debates over “meritocracy” (readers will recall, for example, op-eds linked here by Daniel Bell and others). Zhang’s balanced piece concludes that the examination system was, in a clear sense, “meritocratic.”
