AAS Small Grants Program

For current AAS members, the China and Inner Asia Small Grant Program may be of interest:

Dear AAS Members Working on China, Taiwan and Inner Asia,

The AAS/CIAC has funds to support small grants for members working on China, Taiwan, or Inner Asia. The CIAC Small Grants program is supported by generous funding by the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation, as well as from independent donations from AAS members that are just now in the process of being solicited. We are typically able to award approximately twenty small grants annually (and we are hoping we can garner as much in donations as we did last year to enable this number of awards).

Qualified individuals can apply for small grants up to $2,000 in a number of categories including: research travel, curriculum development, specialist or regional newsletters, conference and seminar organization, websites, translations, collaborative projects, etc.  Travel to conferences and book subventions are explicitly excluded, unfortunately.

Dissertation-level graduate students and scholars whose research concerns China, Taiwan or Inner Asia are invited to submit proposals. Applicants must be AAS members, but there are no citizenship requirements. Junior and independent scholars, adjunct faculty, lecturers, librarians, and dissertation-level graduate students are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants must not have received a CIAC Small Grant within the past three years.

The grant deadline for receiving applications (in hard copy) in the AAS Ann Arbor office is Monday, February 2, 2015.   Award notification will be made by the end of April 2015 and submitted projects must begin after May 1, 2015 and be completed by April 30, 2016 to be considered.

Please note that the award of CIAC small grants for Spring 2015 is dependent on the AAC/CIAC receiving continued funding for this program. The results of an AAS/CIAC grant funding application are still pending, and will not be known until late December 2014/early January 2015.

Please see the AAS website for further details, important guidelines, and application forms:
