ACPA Call for Papers: APA Eastern Division 2016

How to Do Chinese and Comparative Philosophy?: Methodologies and Applications

Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of APCA and

15th Anniversary of DAO: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy

Submission deadline:  April 30, 2015

ACPA Group Meeting at the 2016 Eastern Division Meeting of the American Philosophical Association (APA)

Description:  Association of Chinese Philosophers in America (ACPA) was founded at the APA Eastern Meeting in New York on Dec. 29, 1995 and formally registered in Feb. 1996. We plan to have two panels at APA Eastern, Jan. 2016, along with the DAO Best Essay Award session, to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of ACPA and the 15th Anniversary of Dao: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy. We now invite both senior and junior members and friends of our organization to submit completed drafts or individual paper abstracts for our secessions.

The main theme of our group sessions will be “How to Do Chinese and Comparative Philosophy?: Methodologies and Applications.” We welcome both papers/proposals focusing directly on the methodology of doing Chinese and comparative philosophy and those dealing with major themes of Chinese and comparative philosophy with clear awareness of their methodological approaches. Priority will be given to papers that explore the modern significations of Chinese philosophy and those that bring Chinese philosophy into active dialogue with Western or other philosophical traditions. We will try to organize the sessions in keeping with a cohesive theme. Therefore, the selection of papers for presentation will be partially based on how well they can be worked into a good session.

Please note also that Dao: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy plans to have a special issue or special topic dedicated to the celebration of its 15th Anniversary and the 20th Anniversary of ACPA. We encourage our potential panelists to submit their completed papers to the journal for consideration as well. Please refer to the Call for Paper by the journal of Dao for more information.

Guidelines for paper/abstract submission:

  1. Feel free to submit a 300-500 word abstract for consideration.  However, a complete version of the paper is required no later than 30 days before the meeting to provide the commentators with enough time for composing their response.
  2. If you submit a full paper for consideration, the paper should not exceed 4000 words (about 20-25 minuets’ reading time). Papers must be typed and in reproducible condition.  Please include a word count.
  3. Please let us know whether you are not simultaneously submitting a separate paper proposal to other Asian philosophy groups for the same APA meeting.  In order to maximize the opportunity for multiple scholars to present their original work on Asian philosophy at APA meetings, we will give priority to proposals by scholars who are not double submitting the same competing paper proposals to other groups for the same APA meeting (Commenting or chairing sessions elsewhere on the program is not a concern).
  4. Membership of theACPA is not required for consideration or acceptance, but all participants must be current ACPA members (with their membership dues paid) at the time of presentation, and priority of consideration will be given to members at the time of selection.

The deadline of submission is firm as we will notify the final panel arrangement and call for commentators shortly after the deadline. Paper or abstract submissions and any questions should be sent electronically to ALL three members of the selection committee:
