  1. Now this is really a bold title for a conference! To quote Haun Saussy: doesn’t such a title almost unavoidably “bid” Confucian statements “unrealistically high”? And Saussy has many more interesting thoughts on such gestures (see his Great Walls of Discourse and Other Adventures in Cultural China, 2001, pp. 118-145).
