Job Opening: One-Year Chinese Philosophy Position at Vassar, 2019-2020

One-Year Adjunct Assistant Professor Position in Chinese Philosophy at Vassar College, 2019-2020 FOLLOW THE LINK BELOW FOR MORE INFORMATION AND TO APPLY!!

The appointment will be in Philosophy, but with a contractual obligation to teach one course for the Chinese and Japanese Department. PhD expected by time of appointment. Position carries benefits as eligible, including health insurance. The successful candidate will have a 2-2 load, teaching three courses in the Philosophy Department and one course for the Department of Chinese and Japanese.

For the Philosophy Department, at least two courses must specifically be on Chinese and/or comparative philosophy. Previous offerings in these areas have included surveys of ancient Chinese philosophy, Neo-Confucianism, and Buddhism, but specific courses and content are flexible. Other courses taught for the Philosophy Department will depend on the interests of the successful candidate and departmental needs.

For the Department of Chinese and Japanese, the successful candidate will teach Introduction to Chinese and Japanese Literature. Course content is very flexible, but often includes classic literature like Dream of the Red Chamber and The Tale of Genji.

All teaching will be done in translation, but the successful candidate will be capable of research on texts in the original Chinese. Reading knowledge of Japanese is an advantage but not required. Previous experience teaching non-philosophical Chinese or Japanese literature is not required, but the successful candidate will be enthusiastic about participation in the Department of Chinese and Japanese.
