The 20th Comparative Philosophy Workshop sponsored by Sun Yat-sen University will be held virtually at 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM (Beijing Time), 3rd December (Friday), 2021.

Speaker: Takashi SHOGIMEN (Professor of History, University of Otago)
Moderator: Jun-Hyeok KWAK (Professor of Philosophy (Zhuhai), Sun Yat-sen University)

Takashi SHOGIMEN is professor of history at the University of Otago, New Zealand. He received his PhD from the University of Sheffield in 1998. Before joining the faculty of the U of Otago, he was Research Fellow at Clare Hall in the University of Cambridge. His main areas of research interests are medieval European political thought, modern Japanese political thought, and patriotism and nationalism. His works include Ockham and Political Discourse in the Late Middle Ages (Cambridge, 2007) that offers a comprehensive reappraisal of the political thought of William of Ockham, and The Birth of European Political Thought (Japanese, the University of Nagoya Press, 2013) which was awarded the 2013 Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities, one of the most prestigious prize for humanities researchers and social scientists in Japan. In addition to them, he has published numerous works on comparative political philosophy including Toleration on Comparative Perspective (Coedited with Vicki Spencer, Lexinton 2017) and Western Political Thought in Dialogue with Asia (Coedited with Cary Nederman, Lexington 2008). He is currently a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a Foreign Member of the Academia Europaea.
