Friend Us on Facebook

We’ve set up a Facebook account for the blog, here: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002285389132. If you “friend” us there, you’ll receive a Facebook update on your own Facebook page whenever there is a new post here on the blog. A permanent link to the blog’s Facebook page has also been added to the right hand column.

Please continue to use the blog site for contributing comments in response to postings, rather than the Facebook page.

Chinese History Positions at ANU

For historians who patiently abide our company, I relay this announcement from John Makeham:

The Australian National University (ANU) is currently advertising two new positions in Chinese History:

These are both research-intensive positions. One position is a Senior Fellow specializing in the late imperial and contemporary periods (the Republic and People’s Republic, and Taiwan). The other position is for a Fellow specializing in the pre-modern period.

I would be most grateful if you could bring the following link–which provides details of the positions–to the attention of interested parties: http://jobs.anu.edu.au/PositionDetail.aspx?p=1949

Journal of Buddhist Ethics

FYI I just added a link to the Journals list for the Journal of Buddhist Ethics, the “first academic journal dedicated entirely to Buddhist ethics.” Access to the journal is FREE and online.

[Note: Navigation on the site is not entirely obvious; you have to go to the ‘Select Category’ drop-down menu under the ‘Archives’ heading to access all volumes — vol. 1 thru 18, from 1994 to present.]

Undergraduate Institutions for Studying Chinese Philosophy

In response to a few emailed queries from students about where they might go, or transfer, to study Chinese philosophy at the undergraduate level in the U.S. I wrote the following, really off the top of my head. But as I was writing it, it occurred to me that it might be good to collect a more comprehensive list and create a separate reference page on the blog for it in the near future. So, please look at the list and see what or who is missing from the list — the list is, as I’ve said, off the top of my head. This is a list specifically of “Philosophy” or “Philosophy and Religion” departments in the U.S. I know there are people in other departments teaching undergraduate Chinese philosophy courses. They should be included too, but I’ll need to know what departments they teach in at their institutions. Also, for the purposes of this list, it will make sense only to include places with relatively permanent faculty teaching Chinese philosophy who are actively doing research related to it, as far as you know.

Fudan M.A. and Visiting Program in Chinese Philosophy

Tongdong Bai sends this update to a previous announcement:
The M.A. and Visiting Student Programs were finally approved by Fudan University, and the application materials are available now.  The programs are aimed to offer opportunities to students who wish to study Chinese philosophy but are not yet able to master the Chinese language.  Various types of scholarships will be available.  In particular, I will personally help to attract funding and to find part-time-job opportunities for students who will enroll in these programs.

Leiter Blog Central for APA Session Cancellations and Changes

Brian Leiter has set up some helpful centralized posts for folks to announce any changes or cancellations to sessions, meetings, and job interviews at the Boston APA meeting, slated to begin this evening. If anyone out there is chairing or has organized a session, meeting, or job interviews and would like to post an update for it based on the horrendous winter storm and associated travel problems, please do it over there.
