This Is the Way: Live Show in San Francisco (Pacific Division meeting of the APA)

Update (17 April): Despite what the APA app might have told you, the live session will be in the Sussex Room, which is on the 2nd floor of the hotel. Looking forward to a lively discussion today at 4:00pm PST.

This Is the Way will record an episode in person, with a live audience, at the next meeting of the American Philosophical Association (Pacific Division)!

Time:
4:00-6:00pm
Thursday, April 17, 2025

Location:
Sussex Room
The Westin St. Francis Hotel (next to Union Square)
San Francisco, California, USA

Our topic: Confucianism vs. Buddhism. Justin will describe a couple of criticisms of Buddhism that come out of mainstream Neo-Confucianism. Our special guest, Jenny Hung, will explain how Zongmi 宗密 defends Buddhism against the charges, Richard will moderate, and our audience will ask questions or join the “debate.” As debates about fundamental issues go, we hope it will be lighthearted and fun.

If you will attend this meeting of the APA or will be in the vicinity of San Francisco on April 17, please join us! We can’t promise that it will be a stunning show — this is a new format for us, and we’re still very much amateurs. But we can guarantee that you will witness an historic moment in the the podcast series, for better or worse!
