APA Grant Opportunities
Deadlines are upcoming for two APA grant opportunities possibly relevant to readers…
|
June 30 — Application deadline for Small Grant and Diversity & Inclusiveness funding Each year, the APA’s small grant fund, financed by the Eastern Division, makes up to $25,000 in grants of normally no more than $5,000 each. The board of officers considers applications for these grants each year at its fall meeting in November. See past projects supported by the small grant fund. 2018–2019 Diversity and Inclusiveness Funding In keeping with its mission and goals and the association’s longstanding commitment to addressing philosophy’s serious lack of demographic diversity, the APA board of officers has committed up to $20,000 in the 2018–2019 academic year to fund initiatives focused on this important issue. |

Call for Nominations: APA Prize for Excellence and Innovation in Philosophy Programs
The APA awards a prize for “Excellence and Innovation in Philosophy Programs.” It seems to me that a department that has gone out of its way to diversify the philosophical traditions it teaches and on which its members do research would be worthy of such a prize, though so far this has not happened (see the list below). Any suggestions of a program worthy of nomination?
The American Philosophical Association (APA) and the Philosophy Documentation Center (PDC) invite nominations for the 2018 Prize for Excellence and Innovation in Philosophy Programs. The deadline to submit nominations is June 30.
New Book: Kim, Democracy after Virtue

Editorial summary:
New Book: Huang, Intimate Memory
SUNY has published Martin W. Huang, Intimate Memory: Gender and Mourning in Late Imperial China.
Editorial summary:
In the first study of its kind about the role played by intimate memory in the mourning literature of late imperial China, Martin W. Huang focuses on the question of how men mourned and wrote about women to whom they were closely related. Drawing upon memoirs, epitaphs, biographies, litanies, and elegiac poems, Huang explores issues such as how intimacy shaped the ways in which bereaved male authors conceived of womanhood and how such conceptualizations were inevitably also acts of self-reflection about themselves as men. Their memorial writings reveal complicated self-images as husbands, brothers, sons, and educated Confucian males, while their representations of women are much more complex and diverse than the representations we find in more public genres such as Confucian female exemplar biographies.
