CFP: 4th Asian Philosophical Texts Conference

The Asian Philosophical Texts Conference conference aims at providing a platform for scholars in the field of Asian Studies and world philosophies to discuss and reflect on the task of translating Asian philosophical texts (in the broadest sense) into western languages. This includes, but is not limited to, Cambodian, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Mongolian, Vietnamese etc., philosophical texts from any period. The conference is welcoming any papers on the philosophy of translation, critical analyses of existing translations, or ongoing translation projects for its upcoming conference. Contributions from early and mid-career scholars are welcome and the conference will be a part of an ongoing international collaboration project. The conference will be held at the University of Edinburgh on November 12-13, 2022. Read below for information on submissions.

DEADLINE approaching: The North-East Conference on Chinese Thought is Back!

Update: A reminder that the deadline for abstracts is coming up this Friday!

I’m delighted to announce that this year’s meeting of the North-East Conference on Chinese Thought will be held November 12-13 (Sat. & Sun.) at Yale University. The NECCT annual meeting is an opportunity for students of Chinese thought (broadly defined) from across the northeast (also broadly defined) to share and discuss their work. We are very excited to resume this annual tradition after the disruptions of the last few years.

  • WHERE: Luce Hall at Yale University, which is the home of the Council on East Asian Studies. We will have access to a large conference room and a lounge for meals and refreshments.
  • FORMAT: Fifteen 30-minute slots (eleven on Saturday plus five on Sunday morning.) We ask speakers to speak for 20 minutes and leave 10 minutes for Q&A.
  • ACCOMMODATIONS: For speakers only, hotel rooms in downtown New Haven for the nights of 11/11 and 11/12.
  • TRAVEL: NECCT doesn’t normally cover travel expenses. However, this year we have a fund of $1500 to cover travel costs for students.
  • HOW TO APPLY: By Friday, September 2, please send your talk title and abstract to Mick Hunter (mick.hunter@yale.edu). We expect to have the schedule finalized by 9/5. Students seeking help with travel costs should contact the same email address by the end of October.

CFP: Korean Philosophy and the World

The North American Korean Philosophy Association (NAKPA) is happy to announce the annual meetings in 2022 to be held in Omaha, NE, the US for three days (November 14th through the 16th), co-hosted by Creighton University and the University of Nebraska. For these meetings, the 2022 NAKPA invites papers dealing with any aspects of our experiences related to the change of the world and the changing world, and how Korean philosophy might help us understand the future. Abstracts should be sent to Halla Kim (250-300 words) and should include the title, author’s name, affiliation, and email contact information. Also, panel submissions are welcomed and include everything aforementioned in addition to panelists and their affiliations and abstracts for each of the papers. These should all be submitted by September 1st, 2022.

Online Book Release and Workshop: Monogatari, Existence and Island

The Research Centre for Chinese Cultural Subjectivity in Taiwan will host “Monogatari, Existence, and Island: a New Book Release and Workshop on East Asian Philosophy” online from 14:00 to 17:00 (Taiwan Time) on July 15th, 2022.  The sessions will be held in Mandarin Chinese. CFP: Southeast Early China Roundtable

The Southeast Early China Roundtable (SEECR) is happy to announce that they will be hosting the 26th annual conference at the Eling Eide Center in Sarasota beginning on November 11th. The SEECR is welcoming proposals for presentations focusing on early China from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. Please send a short abstract (250 words) of your presentation and full institutional contact information to Dr. Matthew Wells by September 1st. Early submissions are welcome and lodging in addition to meals will be provided for presenters.

Online Book Presentation: Friendship and Hospitality

Philology In Our Time will be hosting an online book presentation on Xu Dongfeng’s book Friendship and Hospitality: The Jesuit-Confucian Encounter in Late Ming China. The presentation will include the author (Xu Dongfeng), Huan Saussy, and Edward Shaughnessy. All are invited and must preregister.

CFP: Self and Other

The National Taiwan University’s philosophy journal, NTU Philosophical Review is inviting submissions (in English) to their special issue on the theme “Self and Other”. These submissions must relate to the theme in any philosophical tradition. Submission Deadline: July 15, 2022. NEWLAMP Initiative

The Northeast Workshop to Learn About Multicultural Philosophy (NEWLAMP) is holding a summer institute to equip philosophy teachers with competency to ingrate traditionally underrepresented areas of philosophy into their courses. This project works toward remedying the issue of solely discussing “Western”, Anglo-European philosophy and attempting to teach areas such as African or Islamic philosophy. In the past year NEWLAMP focused on African and Africana social and political philosophy. By doing this NEWLAMP thinks that it will raise interesest in the philosophy major and ultimately transform it. Click HERE to read more about this workshop and its ideas.

2022 Fu Foundation Asian Philosophy Essay Award Announcement

The 22nd International Conference on Chinese Philosophy received a total of 57 papers for the Fu Foundation Asian Philosophy Essay Contest and three papers were chosen from them as award recipients. The Fu Foundation award a prize of $2000 to each winner, but there will no longer need travel fees as they will be presented at the ISCP’s online conference on June 27- June 1st  Read below to learn more about the winners and their papers.
