I have just learned that Donald J. Munro, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy and Chinese at the University of Michigan, has passed away. Don was a wonderful human being: caring and insightful mentor to many of us; pioneering scholar and teacher; as well as loving father and husband. He will be greatly missed.

PEW publishes a book symposium on Origins of Moral-Political Philosophy in Early China
Philosophy East & West (73.2) just published a book symposium on my book, Origins of Moral-Political Philosophy in Early China (OUP 2021). It features contributions by six critics, including Loy Hui-chieh (on Introduction, Conclusion, and the Mohists), Hagop Sarkissian (on Confucius), Sungmoon Kim (on Mencius and Xunzi), Yuan Ai (on Laozi), Paul J. D’Ambrosio (on Zhuangzi), and Yuri Pines (on fajia/Legalists), with my response. The symposium covers a broad set of topics, ranging from the relevance of history and culture to philosophy, historical vs. philosophical reasonings, virtue politics, alternative interpretative paradigms, contestations of key terms and passages, contemporary global relevance of moral norms in classical Chinese texts, other early texts that could have been included in the book, among many others.
Call for Abstract: ISCP at the 2024 APA Eastern
The International Society for Chinese Philosophy is excited to announce that they are planning to have two group sessions at the Eastern Division American Philosophical Association (APA) in New York, NY on January 15–18, 2024. Submissions focusing on any area of Chinese philosophy, including comparative engagements with other traditions, are welcomed. CFP: ECNU 2023 Graduate Chinese Philosophy Conference
The East China Normal University is happy to announce that they will be hosting a graduate philosophy conference titled Chinese Philosophy Now and Then. This conference will take place on November 17th-19th, 2023. This conference is intended for graduate students and emerging scholars and encourages conversation between moments in time within the field of Chinese philosophy. They are currently accepting papers that should be focused on Chinese philosophy; presentations on other areas and disciplines of philosophy may enrich the discussion and are also welcome for abstract submissions. CFP: 12th East-West Philosopher’s Conference
The Department of Philosophy at the University of Hawai’i at Mãnoa is happy to announce they will be hosting the 12th East-West Philosopher’s Conference on May 25-31, 2024 at the University of Hawaii-Manoa. They are currently accepting paper proposals to be presented at the conference. This year’s conference explores the many dimensions of trauma and healing. All abstracts (which should be between 250-300 words) should be emailed to the Conference organizers. Those who are accepted should know by December 15th, 2023. TODAY: On-line Book Symposium: Tseng, Confucian Liberalism
The Center for East Asian and Comparative Philosophy at the City University of Hong Kong is hosting an on-line book symposium on Roy Tseng’s recent book, Confucian Liberalism. Speakers include Loubna El Amine, Dongxian Jiang, Sungmoon Kim, and myself, as well as responses from Roy. CFP: ISCP Session at AAR 2023 Meeting
The ISCP is planning to hold an invited Related Scholarly Organization session at the 2023 meeting of the American Academy of Religion (which takes place Nov 18-21 in San Antonio, TX). They are currently inviting the submission of abstracts for individual papers for consideration. Presentation time will be limited to 20 minutes to allow for discussion. Please read below for more information about submissions. Please note that participants in RSO sessions are required to register for the AAR meeting.
